The first mandatory passport — from 18 February 2027

The Digital Product Passport for batteries
Batteries are the first product group with a MANDATORY Digital Product Passport in the EU — and not under the ESPR, but under their own Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. From 18 February 2027, every electric-vehicle battery, every light-means-of-transport (LMT) battery and every industrial battery above 2 kWh must carry a registered passport to be sold on the EU market. The EU's central registry has been live since 20 July 2026, and the passport bundles the carbon footprint, the state of health and supply-chain due diligence into one record linked to the battery via a QR code.

Steps to implement a DPP
Cell production data
Right in the plant, the chemistry, composition, raw-material origin and carbon footprint of every cell and battery pack are recorded.
Generating the digital product passport
Each battery or batch gets a unique identifier with a QR code that links the physical battery to its passport.
Supply-chain due diligence
Origin and due-diligence data for cobalt, lithium, graphite and nickel is collected upstream and written into the passport.
Registration in the EU registry
The passport is registered in the central registry, which returns a unique registration identifier — a condition for placing on the market.
Access for consumers and repairers
By scanning the QR code, consumers, repairers and recyclers see capacity, state of health and safety instructions.
Second life and recycling
At end of life the passport reflects the state of health for repurposing and the share of recovered materials, closing the loop.

Frequently asked questions

Electric-vehicle (EV) batteries, light-means-of-transport (LMT — e-bikes, scooters and similar) batteries, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, manufactured or imported into the EU.
A unique identifier, chemistry and composition, verified carbon footprint, recycled-content share, state of health, supply-chain due-diligence data and safety and recycling instructions.
Batteries have their own Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, adopted before the ESPR delegated acts. That is why their passport obligation arrives earliest — 18 February 2027 — and is independent of the ESPR timeline.
It is the set of parameters describing the remaining capacity and condition of the battery. It lets repairers and recyclers judge whether a battery is suitable for second-life use (repurposing) or for recycling.
Yes. The Regulation introduces phased obligations to declare and meet minimum recycled-content levels for cobalt, lithium, nickel and lead, as well as for the carbon footprint — the passport is where these data become visible.
Start collecting data on chemistry, composition and carbon footprint, build supply-chain due diligence, and test registration in the open test environment — 18 February 2027 is approaching, and the data is the slow part.
